FurAffinity PhotoMeme Polarizes Users

November 14, 2009

I can’t remember the last time I saw a meme become so widespread since Krystal couldn’t enjoy her sandwich in 2007. And it seems a lot of users HATE it.

Apparently “nobody wants to see their ugly mugs”

For those not familiar with the meme, you are asked to post a photo of yourself, as you are at the moment, without fixing your hair, changing your clothes, or anything else in preparation. Not only does it require very little thought to actually participate in it, you also get the worst possible representation of that person’s appearance.

Many users have criticized the meme for encouraging stalkers and eliminating anonymity. While the former is suspect, the latter certainly raises a point. In a fandom where you are encouraged, if not forced to create an identity that is quite different from yourself. It can be disheartening for many artists fans, and several artists actually prefer to take themselves out of the equation entirely, refusing to actually show any pictures of themselves in support of the anonymity.

Even Dragoneer himself has spoken up on the subject, requesting that users post memes to their scraps, as the pictures are quite decidedly NOT of furry content.

What’s your opinion?

That’s a good point, but I think it depends on how involved you are in the fandom, and whether or not your friends and relatives know you’re even involved with the fandom at all. So I can fully understand where people would be concerned with anonymity. Besides, the human body is only a shell, cloaking our true selves. 🙂

Really, I thought the Real Life Meme, where you had your character traced over a photo was far better than this. Its really a Meh meme.

My only real complaint although is that there were people catagorizing the picture based on thier fursona, clogging up the browsing pages. This, I didn’t care for at all.

If people start posting picture of their self on FA, it may help the authority if one day they decide to have a look at all the pedop… sorry, “cub porn”, happening there and condoned by those same admin named here.

I’ve stop caring a long time ago about FA and their constant stupidity.
